Monthly Beginner's Program

At 6:15 PM, prior to each monthly Thursday night lecture, the ASC offers a special learning session open to everyone. A senior member of the ASC will present some of the terms and concepts likely to be encountered in that evening's talk. Also discussed are other topics to help beginners build a solid astrological foundation.

Make a Reading Appointment

If you would like a reading with one of our speakers,
please email the program chair or call the ASC InfoLine 860.568.8617 to check for availability.

Please book your appointment at least two weeks in advance.

This Year's Program

If you are unfamiliar with terms used in these descriptions, we recommend you attend our pre-lecture orientation at 6:15 PM prior to Thursday’s lecture, when a member of the ASC explains terms and concepts anticipated in the lecture or teaches other building blocks of astrology. You may also wish to attend a “basics of astrology” class at our New Age Fair.

SEPTEMBER
Lecture: Thursday, September 18, 2014 7:00 PM
Don Cerow

USA History and Predictions
Through extensively studying the historical record year after year, Don has gained an intimate grasp of the characteristics and personality of our country’s soul. Join us as we journey through more than two hundred years of our past, examining many of the patterns found in the US chart and how they manifested.
Don Cerow’s wide-ranging research of the mythology and astronomy of ancient peoples resulted in his 2013 book, When the Dragon Wore The Crown. He has produced shows for radio and television and taught at universities and planetariums across the country. With the highest certification from the National Council for Geocosmic Research, he continues his former newspaper column in an online form at athenasweb.com
OCTOBER
Lecture: Thursday, October 16, 2014 7:00 PM
Mary Anna Abuzahra

Epona: Year of the Wooden Horse
The Goddess Epona comes to life in our charts! In her role as "The Divine Mare,” she offers us potential for leadership, creativity and fertility. She symbolizes traveling between magical realms and into the underworld and back. She is a Key Keeper and a Name Giver.
Mary Anna Abuzahra (mazahra.com) holds a BA in Communications, with certifications in Early Childhood Education, Archery and Family Coaching. Recently completing Level 1 of Arianna Strozzi's Equine Guided Education Certification, a professional astrologer and ASC member, she currently lives in Vermont.

Workshop: Sat., October 25, 2014, 10:00 AM-5:00 PM
Michael Lutin

Astrology, Time and the Future of Earthlings
In this workshop, we will re-imagine the connection between our brains, the Zodiac and the planets and stars. We will see how the astrological definition of Time makes specific predictions possible. Also, we will examine how the current transits of Venus, Mars and the outer planets are affecting you and the world at large now and for the coming years.

Michael Lutin (michaellutin.com) has pursued Eastern philosophy and psychotherapy in addition to astrology. A former columnist for Vanity Fair, he is the author of four books plus the book and lyrics for five astrological musicals (always a hit at conferences) that he co-produced with composer Doug Morton.
NOVEMBER
Lecture: Thursday, November 20, 2014 7:00 PM
Anthony Louis

The Shared Symbolism of Astrology and Tarot
In this presentation, Anthony reviews the correspondences between astrology and tarot which were proposed by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn at the end of the 19th century. Many tarot readers do not realize that the most influential deck of the 20th century is rooted firmly in astrological symbolism. The rich cross-fertilization of these two disciplines adds depth to both tarot readings and an understanding of the birth chart.

Anthony Louis, a long-time ASC member, has studied astrology since his teens. His interest in astrological symbolism led him to tarot. He has published articles and books in both fields. His most recent text, Tarot Beyond the Basics, explores the common symbolism between the two. Visit angelfire.com/ct/AnthonyLouis.

5:30 PM Potluck Supper
No Pre-Lecture

Please join us for our traditional holiday potluck supper
followed with --

Forum: Thursday, December 11, 2014
Potluck Supper at 5:30 PM – No Pre-lecture

A Fun Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

Instead of a formal presentation, enjoy some group participation! We will warm up with Astro-Jeopardy (played in teams, so there is no individual pressure), then we will have a discussion of the ASC’s Solar Return (from our birthday in October) and the Winter Solstice chart. We will close with participants’ questions about astrology in general or a chart in particular, soliciting answers from the audience.

JANUARY
Lecture: Thursday, January 15, 2015 7:00 PM
Denis Picard

Messages from Another Dimension

Buried in the calculation of our traditional geocentric chart is our baseline, the equator. This Great Circle is one of two that we use to determine planets’ zodiacal position; the other is the ecliptic (the apparent path of the Sun and planets). The first inclines us more toward emotion, while the second highlights intellect. We will focus on the dimension of feeling and how the zodiacal posi-tions from the equator’s perspective (i.e., “declination longitude”) can inform us and help further articulate the timing of an event.

Denis Picard has pursued the study of the stars and metaphysics for most of his life, delving for the past decade into the obscure, little appreciated “hidden dimension” of astrology. He is a past president of the ASC who served many years on the board and as vendor coordinator for our New Age Fairs.

FEBRUARY
Lecture: Thursday February 19, 2015 7:00 PM
Beth Turnage

Crime in the Stars!
Forensic Astrology Tells the Tale

Forensic astrology is a narrow and relatively new specialty. Earliest forensic astrology efforts were based on horary techniques and interesting applications of name asteroid astrology. New experimental techniques can be very revealing and include one that suggests where the victim might be found. We will look at the “traditional” forensic astrology of this field’s pioneers and the new techniques utilizing the applications of “time to the crime,” astro-locality charts and the importance of the "last seen" chart.
Beth Turnage (astrologyexplored.net), in practice for over 28 years, free-lances writing popular astrology blogs on Astrology Media Press, Astrology Explored, Astroblogging and True Crime and Astrology. She has been a member of the ASC for many years and has served on the Board of Directors.

MARCH
Lecture: Thursday, March 19, 2015 7:00 PM
Janet Booth

Exploring Eris

Eris, the newest addition to the solar system, is a dwarf planet far out past Pluto named for the sister of Mars. We will look at its mythological roots, chart examples from the famous and infamous, and its implications in mundane astrology and modern history. For instance, it seems to play a part in women’s issues. This lecture focuses on ideas and speculation about interpretation rather than definitive research. Attendees can bring their charts and offer input.

Workshop: Sat., March 21, 2015, 10:00 AM-5:00 PM
Janet Booth

Follow the Ruler
With so much to look at in charts and forecasting, it is easy to drown in details. Going back to the basics can be very revealing! Using charts of well-known people and data provided by participants (their own or those of people they want to examine), we will follow the rulers of the Sun and Rising signs to see high and low points indicated by progressions, returns and transits.

Janet Booth (astrologybooth.com) has been immersed in the world of astrology for more that 35 years. She has a Level II certification from the National Council for Geocosmic Research and serves a national clientele of individuals, couples and businesses. Author of Janet’s Plan-its astrology calendars and host of a cable TV show, LOOKING UP, on West Hartford Community Television (whctv.org), she is a long-time member and a past president of the ASC.

APRIL
Lecture: Thursday, April 16, 2015 7:00 PM
Mark Seltman

The Horoscope in the Hands

Discover how Mark applies an astrological framework to palmistry. By defining four basic archetypes and three modalities in the hands, he has been able to identify the same twelve archetypes that astrology uses. While the horoscope reveals potential character, behavior, talents and abilities, hands reveal actual character and what a person is doing with his or her potentials. Get set to take a fresh look at your hands.

Mark Seltman (markseltman.com) has read thousands of hands of people of every age, gender, race, color, size, shape, career, and socio-economic status for the past 35 years. He has appeared on ABC The View, CBS Martha Stewart Living, CBS Evening News, FOX Good Day NY, Lifetime TV, NPR, and been featured in the NY Times, NY Newsday, The Village Voice, New York Magazine, INSTYLE Magazine, Family Circle, and Modern Bride. His mission is to give everyone a helping hand: his/her own.

MAY
Lecture: Thursday, May 21, 2015 7:00 PM
Jacqueline Janes

Derivative House Analysis
The Natal Chart reveals a wealth of information beyond relationship and career analysis. Jacqueline will explain how connections between chart sectors show, for example, your relationship with siblings, with each of your children and the various energies associated with each partner (if you have been married more than once) and your partner's earning potential. Come explore and interpret natal charts for the information hidden in derivative house analysis.

Jacqueline Janes, MA (astrotherapist.com), a long-time ASC member, combines astrological consultation and short and long term psychotherapy as a licensed professional counselor and a certified Counseling Astrologer (NCGR IV, ISAR CAP). She has lectured and led workshops in spiritual development and astrological concepts. Her articles have appeared in the Organization of Professional Astrologers’ “Career Astrologer” journal.
