Janet Booth, President 1999-2001 - "Presidential Memories"

Six or seven years ago doesn’t sound like it should seem such a long time, but technology has grown so much so quickly. Reviewing old board meeting notes, I was amused to discover that we were only beginning to discuss how the board of directors could have an online discussion forum around the millennium. That idea came to fruition around 2004 and is now a regular feature of our board communications. Also around the millennium, we were just starting to talk about changing to a different website from our original Geocities site that had been set up and maintained by Tony Louis. Our new site is handled by Debbie Corkindale, and already it’s gone through an overhaul this past summer. About two years ago, Peter Standaart and Dave Drinnan worked with the Debbie to set up emails for the various society functions via our website. For example, LQ@myasc.org is the address for contacting the Lunar Quarterly! Feel free to send in your feedback.

Weather was not our friend during my time as president. The first speaker of the season (Alan Oken, Sept. 1999) couldn’t make it for his lecture due to a hurricane. Fortunately we did have our workshop with him. Then our first lecture of 2000 (January, Michael Lutin) had to be postponed to June due to a blizzard. The next winter, Tom Jerome Roma’s workshop in January 2001 was also doused by a nor’easter. I don’t know about other cancellations in our 35 year history, but three in two seasons makes me worry I might be a jinx that way.

The first New Age Fair during my presidency had an unusual problem, too. When Paul Labbe and I arrived early that morning at the Manchester Masonic Temple, we encountered locked doors and our contact person didn’t answer his phone. We had to break in through a window, only to discover a huge mess left by a party the night before! We had to clean it all up before the fair vendors could set up! We managed to have a good fair in the end; it just started a little late.

Around the millennium, my notes report:

- There were from 111 to 128 members.

- ASC assets were over $8000.

- New Age Fair profits ranged from $1000 to nearly $2000 (roughly the same today).

- Our first astrological software demonstration day was 6/10/2000. (A second is planned for 2/17/08 at our New Age Fair.)
